A Nation under God

“Whereas Canada is founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God and the rule of law” Why is it important that a nation recognize the supremacy of God and how does that benefit its citizens? There is a test to determine if a nation is politically free: are the rulers above the law or under the law? Which leads to the fundamental question: is the ultimate source of law human or divine? If law is entirely human, then those in power have the power to change it as well, which means they are above the law. But if the law is divine it is beyond man and therefore binding on all men. This allows for the only true equality as both kings and prisoners alike are under the same law. When the apostles declared Jesus as the “King of kings”, it was a radical statement and ultimately a transformative revelation that brought for the first time potential freedom for citizens of nations. Without recognition of transcendent law, men live under the rule of might, be it of a few or a majority. Paul declared that Jesus was Lord and not Caesar, although Paul never waged a military political war against Caesar, Paul’s evangelism had profound impact politically as it established the reality of the kingdom of God in the hearts of the people. Acts 9:15 But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings". I encourage us to pray thanking God that he has revealed this truth to many in this nation as can be seen in the preamble of the Charter, and also pray that this truth will continue to bear on the decisions and actions of those in power in the nation.

Knowing what the Word says about God's Will for us individually and corporately is an important tool that Holy Spirit can use to bring us to an understanding of how we can apply this tool to our lives. It gives us vision and order. Our priorities become His priorities and we are then able to sustain a life of prayer for our communities as He gives us endurance and patience with joy.
